About Us

Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra's Story

The Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra (formerly The Pittsburgh Historical Music Society) had its beginnings in 2008 as a community orchestra and ensemble and has, through many stages and changes, continued to maintain itself and to grow. Its foundation is primarily in stringed instruments, with some woodwinds as well.  The Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra performs in period style attire within the greater Pittsburgh region. Each season we endeavour to embody historically-informed performances and create an ambience that is a portal to the past.

Although there are a few professionals sprinkled amongst us, the majority of musicians within the group are amateur musicians that are young professionals in a variety of fields who join in order to have an outlet for their love of music and history.

PHMS is conducted by Mr. William Lockard who has taught strings to the Pittsburgh community for over 50 years.  He began the Fox Chapel school district’s string program and has continued to teach privately, as well as lead the Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra.

Join Us!

The Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra (PBO) extends an invitation to players of stringed instruments to join our community ensemble. Our goal is to recreate the music of the past with the intent of bringing a vibrant, historical musical experience to life.

The PBO endeavors to perform using original or reproduction instruments, in historical dress, and in historical venues. Our orchestra is an excellent way to connect with history and engage in community music making. Lively and engaging, the Pittsburgh Baroque Orchestra’s interpretation of music transports the audience into the 18th and 19th centuries.

We strive for an authentic sound invoked by the use of baroque bows and period style instruments including but not limited to: violin, viola, cello, viol de gamba, bass, theorbo, and harpsichord, as well as some woodwinds, such as flutes and recorders. While it is our goal to play using historical instruments, modern instruments are often used, played in the baroque manner.

Guest artists also participate using other period instruments for some programs. Experience in playing in the baroque style is not necessary to participate.

We are a volunteer organization and do not charge anyone to join, but do ask our members to provide their own attire in the time period being performed. Assistance is available in acquiring and understanding appropriate historical dress.
